External popups: create and publish popups on any website

The External Popups feature allows you to create visually engaging pop-ups in Instapage and display them on websites that are not hosted on Instapage (external websites). You can design, manage, publish, and track pop-ups from a single place in the Popup Library, and reuse them across sites.

With External Popups, you can:

  • Create pop-ups and save them in the dedicated Popup library

  • Trigger them on any external website using a script

  • Control when and how they appear using triggers and rules

  • Track their performance with built-in analytics

Create a pop-up

You can create an external pop-up in two ways; either from scratch or from an existing pre-made template.

Create a popup from scratch

To create the popup from scratch, go to Assets > Popups> External Pops. Click Create External Popup.

You will be taken to the popup builder, where you can go ahead and design your pop-up. Currently, you can add any of our native widgets to an external pop-up:

  • headlines
  • paragraphs
  • forms
  • images
  • carousel
  • buttons
  • HTML element
  • video
  • boxes & circles
  • vertical & horizontal lines
  • accordion
  • a timer

Once you are happy with your design, click Save Changes. Now you can exit the popup builder, where the file will be saved under External Popups.

From the External Popups Library, you can rename, duplicate or delete the popup, by clicking on the three dots on the popup, and selecting the outcome from the dropdown.

Publish a pop-up on an external website

Each pop-up in the External Popups Library can be displayed on an external website. You can configure Triggers (when the pop-up appears) and Rules (who sees it and under which conditions). This allows you to run targeted campaigns and control exactly when and where your pop-ups are shown.

To publish a pop-up on an external site, click on the popup from the External Popups library in order to open the popup slideout, and then select Publish Popup. This will take you to the slideout options where Domain Settings, Triggers, Frequency and Installation settings can be made.

If you choose only selected pages, then add the particular URL of the page or use the asterisk symbol * to choose a group of pages. For example, https://mysite.com/products/* - where asterisk symbol stands for any combination of symbols that go after the link, so that all pages that start with https://mysite.com/products/ will be selected.

If you are happy with these settings, click Continue.

2. Triggers

On the next page on the slide-out, you will select your popup Triggers.

You can select when to show the popup: Immediately, When any condition is met, or When all conditions are met.

Here you will find the generated script which you will need to copy and paste into the <head> section of the external website.

Once it has been added to the code of the external website, come back to the same screen and click on Verify Connection

Once the connection is successfully verified, select Publish. Your External popup is now live!

Note: You can publish multiple pop-ups on the same website and manage all active and inactive pop-ups from the Popup library directly.

Note: Popups that have not been published are marked with the Draft status (grey dot). Activated popups are marked with Activated status (green dot).
