A sitemap is a file (usually in XML format) that lists the important pages of your website. It helps search engines like Google understand your site’s structure and quickly find and index your content.
With this in mind, we are launching the Sitemaps feature, which makes it easier to submit your published pages to search engines, such as Google Search Console, so they can be discovered and indexed faster.
Prepare your page
- 1. Click on the page you want to include in the sitemap.
- 2. In the slider, click on Search & Social.
- 3. Turn on the toggle for Show in search results. It will be turned off by default.
- 4. Click Save on the Search & Social section and return to the main view of the slider.
-
5. Publish your page to a subdomain and a domain that you own or have access to, and do not use an optional directory just yet. To publish your page, you can check out our article here: https://d.pr/RN9mAf.
Note:
Skipping the “Optional Directory” is necessary so the file can be uploaded correctly to Google Search Console.
Activate the sitemap
- 1. Click on the name of your workspace at the top left corner, select Workspace Settings, and then go to the Domains section.
-
2. Click on the three-dot menu next to the domain you’ve just published your page on and select Activate sitemap.
-
3. Wait a few minutes, then click Open Sitemap. You’ll see an XML file containing the URL of your published page. Any new page published on the same subdomain and domain will automatically be added to the sitemap.
This will be visible by checking the globe icon in your dashboard, as seen here:
NOTE: Currently, the sitemap cannot be activated for pages published through Wordpress or Drupal.
Add the sitemap to Google Search Console
Once your sitemap is active, you can submit it to Google Search Console:
- 1. Sign in to Google Search Console: https://search.google.com/search-console/welcome.
- 2. Select one of the verification methods. From the verification options that you will see in the list, you cannot use the HTML file, so please pick one of the other methods below it. For example, you can use the one described here https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9008080#zippy=%2Cdomain-name-provider.
- 3. From the left menu, click on Sitemaps.
- 4. In the Add sitemap URL field, enter your sitemap URL from the Domains section or the last part of it: sitemap-123456.xml.
- 5. Click on Submit.
Give some time until Google processes the sitemap and starts indexing your URLs.
That’s it! You’ve successfully set up and submitted your sitemap. New pages you publish on the same domain will automatically be included.
