Google Call Tracking

If you want to see which specific keywords, ads, ad groups, and campaigns are leading to call conversions, you can use dynamically-generated Google forwarding numbers to replace your business number on your website.

In order track conversions made from a call ad set up with Google Ads you will need:

  • An Ads account. If you don’t have one, you can sign up at https://ads.google.com/
  • An active call extension: At least one call extension is required;
  • A business in an eligible country. Google forwarding numbers are currently available in these countries;
  • A landing page;

After you’ve successfully created your Ads and set your conversion as per Google’s documentation, you will need to place the provided tracking code on your landing page.

1. Place the conversion tracking code under Settings - JavaScript - Header

<script type="text/javascript">
(function(a,e,c,f,g,b,d){var h={ak:"123456789",cl:"_ABcDEFg12hI34567jK"};a[c]=a[c]||function(){(a[c].q=a[c].q||[]).push(arguments)};a[f]||(a[f]=h.ak);b=e.createElement(g);b.async=1;b.src="//www.gstatic.com/wcm/loader.js";d=e.getElementsByTagName(g)[0];d.parentNode.insertBefore(b,d);a._googWcmGet=function(b,d,e){a[c](2,b,h,d,null,new Date,e)}})(window,document,"_googWcmImpl","_googWcmAk","script");

2. Place the JavaScript snippet underneath the conversion tracking code in order to display the Google forwarding number

window.onload = function(){
  _googWcmGet('number', '1-800-123-4567');

Note: this code will replace the following code mentioned by Google.

<body onload="_googWcmGet('number', '1-800-123-4567')">
 <span class="number">1-800-123-4567</span>

3. Add the phone number on your page using an HTML widget (Add New - HTML)

<a href="tel:1-800-123-4567" class="number">1-800-123-4567</a>

This link can be modified to have the same font as your other elements afterwards.

4. Checking your code

It can take up to an hour for your ads to be enabled for this conversion action. If you would like to make sure it's working, you can do a search that brings up your ad, then click the ad to visit your website (you'll be charged for the click). Your regular phone number should now be replaced with a Google forwarding number.

If you're doing repeated tests, delete the "gwcm" cookie from your browser before clicking on an ad again.

And you are done, now you can identify and track all calls made from your page.
